Clear answers about video background removal.
Including the ones where the honest answer is that the tool does not do that.
Output and quality
What exactly do I get back?
BGRemove exports transparent WebM video using VP9 with a real alpha channel. This output is available to every signed-in user at no cost and preserves the source video’s dimensions. You can download the transparent WebM, or open the finished clip in Change Background to add a color, blur, image, or video and export an MP4.
How good are the edges on hair?
Hair is one of the hardest edges to preserve. Following the subject across frames helps individual strands remain more stable than processing each frame separately, instead of collapsing into a hard outline.
Will the edge flicker between frames?
It should not. The matte carries context from earlier frames, which is what separates video matting from running an image tool on a loop. Flicker is the artefact that approach produces and the reason we do not use it.
What does it fail on?
Large genuinely transparent areas such as glass, smoke and fine mesh. Several overlapping subjects that swap depth. Severely underexposed footage where the edge is not visible in the source either. These are stated plainly on the homepage for the same reason they are stated here.
Can I adjust the matte if it is slightly off?
BGRemove currently focuses on automatic matting and transparent WebM output. It does not currently include manual edge refinement or a second-pass refinement mode.
Input and limits
Which formats can I upload?
BGRemove accepts MP4, MOV, WebM, M4V, and GIF. Videos can be up to 60 seconds long.
How long can a clip be?
Each video can be up to 60 seconds long. For anything longer, cut it into scenes first. You will get a better matte that way regardless, because scene changes are where tracking is most likely to slip.
Does it work on vertical video?
Yes, natively. Aspect ratio is preserved exactly. Nothing is cropped or padded on the way through, including 9:16 and 1:1.
Can it handle more than one person in frame?
Usually, as long as they stay separable. Two people standing apart is fine. A crowd where subjects overlap and swap depth is where it starts picking the wrong one.
Privacy and data
Is my footage used to train anything?
No. Not by us, and not by the processing provider under our agreement. Your uploads exist to produce your output and for nothing else.
How long are my files kept?
Source uploads and generated transparent videos are retained for 24 hours, then removed. Download the result before it expires. When you delete a file, it is removed immediately.
Where is processing done?
In the EU. Full detail on sub-processors and transfers is in the privacy policy.
What do you store about me?
Your Google account email and name, your allowance, and basic details for each processing job, such as its status and timestamps. No card details are collected or stored, because there is nothing to pay for.
Account and free access
How much can I do for free?
BGRemove currently gives each signed-in account up to 3 successful video background removals per 24-hour allowance window. Failed jobs do not count, and the full allowance resets when the window ends. There is no watermark, card, subscription, credit pack, or paid upgrade. The window runs 24 hours rather than resetting at calendar midnight, so there is no timezone to work out.
Is changing a background free?
Yes. Background changes are completely free and unlimited. The 3-video allowance applies only when removing an original background. Open a finished clip in Change Background to add a color, blur, image, or video and export an MP4.
Why is Google the only sign-in option?
Google sign-in lets you use BGRemove without creating another password, and there is no password for us to store or leak. If enough people need email sign-in or another provider we will add it, but not as a default.
Are there any paid plans?
No. BGRemove currently has no paid plan or recurring subscription to cancel.
How does the 24-hour allowance work?
Video processing uses metered infrastructure. The 3-video allowance keeps free access available to more people, and the full allowance resets when the 24-hour window ends.
